Pipes (Oilfield)

Pipes (Oilfield) is used to compute the volumes and weights of various oilfield pipes. This includes the calculation of:

  • The metal displacement volume for an open-ended or closed-ended pipe string.
  • The internal volume of a pipe string (pipe string capacity)
  • The annular volume between two pipe strings.
  • The annular volume between a pipe string and the open hole.
  • The annular volume between a pipe string and a combination of pipe string and open hole.
  • The weight of a pipe string in air or in a fluid (the calculator allows to define a different fluid density inside and outside the pipe string).

For annular volume calculations, the app allows the addition of an excess percent . This can be applied to either the open hole sections only or to open hole and outer pipe sections.

Also, the Pipes (Oilfield) App allows each of the above strings to be composed of three different pipe sections and the same applies to the open hole. The app includes a complete database of all API casing, drill pipe and tubing pipes as well as the list of the most common coiled tubing and open hole sizes. A provision of adding and deleting user's defined pipe details is made through the "User's Data" module. Moreover, the app allows saving the calculation details and sharing them through emails, messaging apps, and through iCloud account to different user's devices.

Toolbar

Toolbar

The Pipes (Oilfield) app includes a toolbar that appears at the top of all modules. The toolbar's buttons are used to perform the below functions:

  1. Button (1) allows sharing a screen capture of the calculations via email, messaging apps, airdrop, and other apps.... or saving it to the photos folder.
  2. Button (2) composes an email message including all inputs and outputs of the calculation. This option requires that at least one user email address is defined in the mail app.
  3. Button (3) saves the calculation results under the name specified by the user in textfield (6). Once successfully saved, the record will appear in pickerview (7).
  4. Button (4) allows to access the units settings screen from within the module. If the units are changed and saved in the "Units" screen, they will also be updated in all the calculation modules.
  5. Button (5) : In specific cases, the user will need  to recall the units saved under the "Units" screen. This is specially true if the user loads a saved case from pickerview (7)  and this case has different units than the preferred saved units. In such case, pressing button (5) will load the saved units from the "Units" screen without having to leave the current screen.
  6. Button (8) allows to access the User's Pipe Data screen to input and save a new pipe string or open hole specifications. This is required if the pipe string to be used does not exist in the app database. Once the input is completed in the "User's Data" screen, the new pipe will appear at the top of the list of pipes or open hole in all other modules.

Metal Displacement & Volume

Metal Displacement & Volume

The "Metal Displacement & Volume" module allows the quick computation of the metal displacement for open-ended and closed-ended pipe string as well as the inner volume of the string.

User can enter up to three (3) pipe sections in a single string (Top, Middle and Bottom pipe sections).  The depths against each section represent the depth of the bottom of this section and NOT the length of the section. Aslo, the pipe sections can be of different type (casing, DP, Tubing, Coiled Tubing or Open Hole), sizes (OD and ID), wall thickness and weight.

Metal Displacement & Volume - Data Entry

Metal Displacement & Volume - Data Entry

The Pipes (Oilfield) App includes a database of all API casings, drill pipes and tubings. It also includes the most common coiled tubing and open hole sizes. The OD, ID, wall thickness and weight of the selected pipe are displayed below pickerview (2).

The below steps shall be followed to add the desired pipe/OH to the corresponding section of the pipe/OH string :

  1. Select the type of pipe/OH desired in segment control (1)
  2. Select the size of pipe/OH desired from pickerview (2). The OD, ID, wall thickness and unit weight data of the selected pipe will be displayed below the pickerview.
  3. Press button three(3), four(4) or five(5) to copy the pipe data to the desire pipe section.
  4. To clear a wrong entry, press the corresponding "Clear" buttons 6, 7 or 8.

It is optional to enter all three pipe/OH sections in the string so, user can enter only one or two pipe sections. User can also enter a mix of casing, drill pipe, tubing, coiled tubing and OH in any of the three pipe sections.

Note: the pipe sections should be entered from top to bottom. If only one section is to be calculated, then it should be entered in the top most section.

Once the pipe/OH sections are selected, the  end-of-pipe depth for each section should be entered in textfields 9, 10 and 11.

If user have elected to enter only one or two pipe sections, he needs to input  the corresponding end-of-pipe depth of these pipe sections only. The calculator will consider the depth of the none used sections similar to the depth of the last entered section (Top or Middle section).
